ONCE MORE UNTO THE BREACH ...

With the defenses of the Southern Appalachians sundered, the only thing standing between the ravening Posleen hordes and the soft interior of the Cumberland Plateau are the veterans of the 555th Mobile Infantry.

Dropped into Rabun Pass, with a couple of million Posleen behind them and fourteen million to the front, the only question is which will run out first power, bullets or bodies.

But they have a hole card far to the north the shattered SheVa Nine, nicknamed "Bun-Bun," is undergoing a facelift. Rising from its smoking ashes is a new weapon of war, armed with the most advanced weaponry Terra has ever produced, capable of facing both the Posleen hordes and their redoubtable space-cruisers. Capable of dealing out Hell as only SheVa Nine can.

But when push comes to vaporization, if Mike O'Neal and the other members of the 555th are going to survive, it will come down to how much Posleen butt Bun-Bun can kick.

Prepare to eat antimatter, Posleen-boy.

At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

John Ringo had visited 23 countries and attended 14 schools by the time he graduated high school. This left him with a wonderful appreciation of the oneness of humanity and a permanent aversion to foreign food. He chose to study marine biology and really liked it. Unfortunately the pay was for beans. So he turned to quality control database management, where the pay was much better. His highest hopes were to someday upgrade to SQL Server, at which point, he thought, his life would be complete. But then Fate took a hand John has become a professional science fiction writer, and is in the early stages of becoming fabulously wealthy, which his publisher has assured him is the common lot of science fiction writers who write for Baen Books. In addition to his own enthusiastically received military SF series—A Hymn Before Battle, Gust Front, When the Devil Dances, and now Hell's Faire—he is collaborating with New York Times best-selling author David Weber on a new SF adventure series March Upcountry, March to the Sea, and March to the Stars, with more to come.

With his bachelor years spent in the airborne, cave diving, rock-climbing, rappelling, hunting, spear-fishing, and sailing, the author is now happy to let other people risk their necks. He prefers to write science fiction (both alone and in collaboration with David Weber) raise Arabian horses, dandle his kids and watch the grass grow. Someday he may even cut it. But not today. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe he'll just let the horses eat it.

Hell Faire Legacy of the Aldenata Book 4 eBook John Ringo

This is a global review of the whole series (Legacy of the Aldenata - Amazon might return another series name, but this seem to be the correct title):
1- A hymn before battle
2- Gust Front
3- When the devil dances
4- Hell's faire
=================
#1
It was absolutely exact & terrible, hehe... .
John Ringo shows basically that he knows everything about the military, but most of the time it's not relevant for the story itself => after having read everything up to 50% of the book I had to start jumping pages.
-1 star because I won't read it again
-1 star because I had to push to keep on reading
-1 star because there were too many people & situations involved - especially too many situation switches (I'm swiss, so no detailed knowledge of US geography)

#2, #3, #4:
Personally I give them all between 3 and 4 stars.
I did see a big improvement between #1 and the rest, but they're all still too detailed for my taste, and I don't think I'll read any of them again.

On the other hand, I cannot understand the sudden jump in quality from this to the extremes of the series "black tide rising", "troy rising" and the "looking glass".
So, in any case even if you do not plan to read this book (or did not like it), pls. still try "black tide rising" (zombies) or "troy rising" / "looking glass" (sci-fi).

Hell Faire Legacy of the Aldenata Book 4 eBook John Ringo Reviews

I missed out on this series because I was a cross country truck driver at the time these first four books were published, and I can tell you that most truck stops only rent old audiobooks instead of selling paperback or hard cover books.

I joined the US Army a few years after John Ringo had joined and we even served in the same areas, unfortunately I never got to meet him because I was only a truck driver that mainly drove for the Special Forces community.
Some of the details in this book is not totally accurate as far as the military goes, but it did drastically change after the author ETSd.

I am looking forward to buying the rest of this series and will recommend it to a few of my buddies who are science fiction fans.
I love the first 3 books in this series. I got the impression by this one that Ringo was fairly tired of the whole Posleen universe, either that or he'd gone senile. If you took out the repetitive stuff, this book would be about 1/2 as long. It's not subtle repetition, either; several times there's an entire paragraph that is repeated verbatim on facing pages.
Also, in several places his descriptions of battles seemed fairly slipshod; whereas in the earlier books even someone like me, with no personal background in the military but who is a fair student of military history & fairly big fan of milSF was able to get into the battle scenes without feeling lost. This time around, there's several skirmishes where I'd read & reread passages, still have no idea what was really going on because of the sloppy description, then just shrug in irritation & read on, deciding to just blow off (as it were) that scene.
The writing in general in this book is not as good overall as it is in the first 3, not as crisp or clever. We do get to see more of the great gang in Bunbun the SheVa, which is great if you're a fan of Sluggy Freelance...which I became after reading about it in the previous book (I ended up buying all the SF books-- check 'em out, they're hilarious!).
Having read the first 4-plus books in the series, I always find myself getting annoyed as I near the end of this one. Not only is this book a "Faire" disappointment, but I know that my involvement in the Posliverse is about to come to a screeching halt...I thought "Cally's War" was one of the worst, dumbest books I've ever attempted to read, so bad that I refuse to try the next one because it's done with the same co-author (Julie Cochrane). I wasted more time fooling around with clothing & makeup & shoes in C's War than I have in the rest of my life put together (& yes, I is female, & so do actually use makeup & such; I just don't make a religion of it, as does poor Cally in that book. If she knew what was coming she probably would've let the Posties eat her in this book.)
Anyway, if you enjoyed the first 3 Posleen books, you probably will get some enjoyment out of this one. I warn anyone who doesn't live for clothing & shoes to avoid the piece of dreck to come, however. Just assume that eventually the Posties will get kicked off Earth & someone will be around to rebuild civilization....& make all those stupid shoes.
